Experiences
Anyone who discovers the Eastern Cape soon realizes: everything here feels bigger, wilder, and more diverse than you could ever imagine.
This region is almost as large as Germany — but with far fewer people and infinitely more unique experiences.
Yet, not every adventure suits every traveler. My hosts have personally tested many private game reserves — both as overnight guests and day visitors — so their insights and tips come from real experience. You’ll find their impressions in our Gallery.
You might have already read somewhere that in South Africa, it helps to have a local who truly knows the area. That’s exactly what my hosts discovered too — and they’re happy to share their insider knowledge with you.
Our general recommendation (for almost everyone):
- Along the Garden Route, there are only limited safari opportunities, and Cape Town is not known for its wildlife. So we strongly suggest allowing enough time around Addo for your safari experiences — because for most visitors, it’s the wildlife encounters that leave the most unforgettable memories. After all, seeing the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino) in their natural habitat is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Of course, you can’t expect to see every animal on every drive — that’s part of the adventure! That’s why both we and most guidebooks recommend doing several game drives and spending 3–5 nights in the Eastern Cape region.
- If your travel budget allows, spend at least one night in a private game reserve. Only there can you experience walking safaris or extended night drives. Prices usually start at around €1,000 per room per night, including meals and game drives. It’s a premium rate — but we’ve never met anyone who regretted it. Choosing the right reserve is key: if you’re investing in a “once in a lifetime” adventure, it should truly be exceptional. And the rest of your time? Spend it with us!We recommend 3–4 nights here to fully experience the best of the Eastern Cape. Most activities are just 5 to 15 minutes away, and within 30 minutes, with a little luck, you could even encounter the Big Seven.
